The Roanoke (VA) Times, 9/17:

Station renovation gets nod
The Virginian Railway station has been exposed to the elements since a 2001 fire.

Renovation work on Roanoke's historic Virginian Railway passenger station is about to get under way at last, say members of the National Railway Historical Society, which owns it.

Saving the station at Williamson Road and Jefferson Street, which was badly damaged in a 2001 fire, has long been a priority for historic preservationists and railroad buffs. Some $500,000 in federal funds was designated for the project years ago, but actual work has been slowed by government regulations and red tape, said Skip Salmon, secretary of the historical society's Roanoke chapter. Among the issues has been proving the project will not negatively affect the habitat of an endangered fish species in the Roanoke River, he said.

High platform now under consideration for Roanoke Amtrak station

The public-private team working to bring Amtrak service to Roanoke has changed course and ordered a basic design for a raised platform that offers level boarding for all passengers.

Amtrak, state transportation officials and the host railroad, Norfolk Southern, previously said a raised platform would be too large for the sliver of land in downtown Roanoke picked out for train boarding. They said only a low platform, which requires less space, would fit.

Amtrak people, let's think "outside the box."  Why not use a retractable platform?   ^_^ See example of NYCTA at South Ferry. Amtrak conductor can activate it by using a garage door opener-style transponder.

Business owner concerned with Amtrak platform construction

ROANOKE, Va.

One business owner in Roanoke is raising concerns about a passenger train platform project nearby.

Crews have started work on the Amtrak platform near 4th Street, which is near Roanoke Fruit and Produce Company.

"As you can see it's taken up a lot of our area where our tractor trailers have to back in and it's making it very difficult for us to get trucks in and out, tractor trailer trucks in and out of our parking lot," said Fred Najjum.  .  .  .
