Saginaw man accused of Amtrak stabbings not competent for trial, report says

 

NILES, MI -- A man accused of stabbing four people on an Amtrak train in southwestern Michigan has been found mentally incompetent for trial, the Associated Press reported.

 

Berrien County Judge Dennis Wiley ruled Monday, March 9, that 44-year-old Michael D. Williams lacks the capacity to aid in his defense to attempted murder charges, AP reported.

 

He'll undergo mental health care and be re-evaluated periodically to see if his condition has changed, AP reported.

Niles Amtrak stabbing suspect faces 8 new charges

 

 

NILES — The Saginaw man who allegedly stabbed four people on an Amtrak train coming into Niles last December was arraigned Wednesday on eight new charges. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next Tuesday on the new charges, as well as the four initial charges against him.

 

Michael Darnell Williams, 44, now faces four charges of assault with intent to murder, as well as one additional charge of assault with intent to murder, five counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count of carrying a concealed weapon (knife) and one count of resisting and obstructing police.

 

No determination, however, has been made yet on whether he can be found criminally responsible for the acts.

Amtrak stabber found not guilty by reason of insanity

 

NILES, MI — A man who is accused of stabbing four people on an Amtrak train traveling from Chicago to Michigan in December 2014 was found not guilty of the crime by reason of insanity Wednesday.

 

Michael Darnell Williams, 45, of Saginaw, was accused of stabbing four people as the train pulled into the Niles station. Before arriving at the station, railroad workers were alerted and had called police because of Williams' strange behavior.

2nd victim sues Amtrak following stabbing

 

Another of the passengers who was stabbed while riding a train in southwest Michigan two years ago has sued Amtrak, saying it should have removed the attacker from the train before anyone was hurt.

Amtrak defending suits over Niles train stabbing

 

Two of the four people who were stabbed while aboard an Amtrak train near Niles in 2014 are suing the railroad.

 

Gayle VanVorst filed a lawsuit Nov. 30, 2016, in Berrien County Trial Court along with her husband, Jeffrey VanVorst. But because the U.S. government owns a controlling share of the National Railroad Passenger Corp., doing business as Amtrak, the suit was recently moved to federal court.
