Amtrak news release. 12/18:

AMTRAK EXPANDS DISCOUNT ON PROGRAM FOR VETERANS
15 percent off same-day travel, benefits for immediate family

WASHINGTON – Amtrak and Veterans Advantage continue to show their support of military veterans by expanding the 15 percent discount to include same-day travel and extending benefits to immediate family members. The new benefits go into effect on Jan. 15, 2015. Veterans Advantage is a members-only program dedicated to creating new benefits for military veterans and their families on travel and shopping. Members holding a valid VetRewards Card are eligible to receive a 15 percent discount on the lowest available fare on most Amtrak trains. VetRewards Card members who also enroll in Amtrak Guest Rewards will receive two points for every dollar spent on Amtrak travel, or up to 750 points per trip on weekend service on Acela Express.

“Amtrak is grateful to our nation’s military veterans and families for their commitment and sacrifices. We are proud to expand this program so that immediate family members of military veterans are able to take advantage of discounted train travel on America’s Railroad," said Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman, a Vietnam veteran.

Visit the Amtrak page on the Veterans Advantage website to enroll in the program. Members may take advantage of the benefits when making reservations through Amtrak.com, a travel agent or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL. Members may also present their Veterans Advantage membership card at any staffed Amtrak station to receive the special fare. Some restrictions do apply.

“Since 2001, Amtrak has honored active-duty military and veterans with Veterans Advantage discounts, and we are delighted Amtrak will now expand the recognition for these savings to include our military veteran families,” said H. Scott Higgins, a Vietnam Veteran, and Veterans Advantage Founder and CEO. “For the first time, with special thanks to U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, family members will be eligible for Amtrak’s Veterans Advantage discount, with its newly enhanced benefit of no advance purchase requirement for same-day discounted travel.”

Amtrak also offers discounts for active-duty members of the armed forces not enrolled in Veterans Advantage. Active duty U.S. military personnel, their spouses and their dependents are eligible for a 10 percent discount off the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains.

Amtrak has a long history of supporting veterans and active military members, and partners with recruiting groups that focus on veteran hiring. Amtrak is committed to making sure 25 percent of its new hires are veterans by the end of 2015.
