Crowley visited New Jersey to gain insight on light rail line for Glendale

In order to get the wheels moving on a plan to bring light rail service to western Queens, Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley took a trip to New Jersey to visit the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line and gather information on how such a project could affect Glendale and the surrounding communities.

Crowley visits New Jersey for light rail Ideas

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Middle Village) went to New Jersey in late July to visit the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line in an effort to gather more information about her own proposal to bring a light rail line to Glendale and Middle Village.

I hope the Councilwoman saw the HBLRT's flaws as well, such as lackadaisical fare enforcement and no onboard authority other than the operator, which leads to people illegally smoking, selling products, and doing other crimes in between the stations.  Not to mention overcrowded trains on weekends, thanks to various service cuts over the years.

This proposed light rail line in Queens would utilize the right-of-way of the Lower Montauk Branch of the LIRR, which at best didn't see more than one or two trains per day and was quietly phased out in recent years.  There are good population generators along the line, and good connections with existing subway lines, such as the M line in Middle Village.

Crowley pushing for light rail project in Queens

Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley thinks her Queens district deserves some of the light rail transit benefits that Jersey City, Hoboken and Bayonne — just across the Hudson River — have been enjoying in recent years.

Second Avenue Sagas, 10/20/15:

From Queens, light rail support; from Pratt’s Byron, doubts

Now that the head of the City Council’s Transportation Committee has opened the door to a light rail study, the floodwaters of potential political requests have been let loose. Barely had the pixels burned on Ydanis Rodriguez’s request when another council member — this one from Queens — called for a light rail investment in her borough. This one comes from Elizabeth Crowley, and it may highlight the pitfalls of Shiny New Thing syndrome.

Now the mode has apparently switched to commuter rail. ;)

Katz comes out in support of Crowley’s light rail proposal

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has thrown her support behind a proposal to return commuter rail service to the Long Island Rail Road’s Lower Montauk Branch. Katz said a light rail service should run from Long Island City to Jamaica, and advocated for the rail system be integrated into a larger transportation plan for Queens.

I would think this would end up being light rail, not commuter rail. After all, they HAD commuter rail and it obviously wasn't working. LIRR at the end was sending only one train per day over the Lower Montauk Branch, with the rest using the main trunk line. And if it does materialize as light rail, it would mesh well with DeBlasio's pet plan to build a line along the riverfront between Brooklyn and Queens; the two lines could meet and share resources in western Queens.
