After 61 Years, Detroit Gets A Streetcar Once More

Today marks the launch of something both old and new in Detroit: a streetcar down Woodward Avenue. The streetcar opened to the public on Friday morning, after ten years of planning and political wrangling.

So if there's one lesson to be gleaned from other cities, it's that a major obstacle to Detroit's streetcar system will likely be its most famous export: the automobile.

Ain't that the truth! Sloan

M-1 Rail

DETROIT — After a decade of stops and starts, M-1 Rail executives and state and local officials gathered to celebrate the launch of Detroit’s 3.3-mile streetcar system along Woodward Avenue, Crain’s reports.

The $142 million streetcar system championed by Penske is expected to host 5,000 to 8,000 riders per day. Many have attributed a recent boom in investment along Woodward to its installation — more than $7 billion has been poured into or planned for 211 development projects along the avenue since 2013, according to a QLine report.

In addition to the system's economic impact, public officials praised M-1 Rail's inclusion efforts during the QLine's creation, with about 27% of construction service contracts going to disadvantaged businesses, with women-owned and minority-owned businesses also involved.
