The Metra Board of Directors approved a $70.9 million contract to purchase 15 remanufactured locomotives to begin to replace Metra’s aging fleet. The contract with Progress Rail Locomotives of La Grange includes options to buy up to 27 additional locomotives, if funding is available.

Progress Rail will take existing EMD SD70MAC freight locomotives and upgrade and configure them for passenger use. All components will either be refurbished, upgraded or new. The newly remanufactured locomotives will be designated as SD70MACH locomotives.

The remanufactured unit from Progress Rail is the first of Metra’s 500 series. The Board in 2019 approved a $70.9 million contract for 15 remanufactured and repurposed diesel-electric locomotives to modernize the Chicago agency’s aging fleet. The contract included options for up to 27 additional units.  . . .

Metra SD70MACH First Revenue Run in the Lead!

On November 29th, 2023, Metra SD70MACH #507 led MDN train 2135 to Fox Lake, Illinois. This would be the first time a new MACH would ever led a revenue passenger train! Metra started receiving their SD70MACHs (rebuilt from KCS/TFM SD70MACs) last year and began testing them in mid to late 2023. A few entered revenue service on the MDN, MDW, and NCS lines in the fall, but as trail units only. Until now. With the #507 in the lead, I caught 2135 arriving at the end of the line in Fox Lake and then being put away in the coach yard for the night. I'm excited to start seeing these things on trains!
