Major changes to how fares are collected will go into effect January 1, 2017.  The smart card known as Connect Card will offer a $2.50 anywhere fare --- that is, zones will be eliminated.  Cash fare passengers will pay $2.75 per ride (presumably continuing to observe zone surcharges), with no paper transfers available anymore.

And the great news for residents and visitors to Pittsburgh is that FINALLY, PAT will offer a Day Pass instrument for $7.00 .

Details on this page and this .pdf fact sheet.
