Hurricane Frances Update
September 7, 2004
Hurricane Frances has been downgraded to a tropical depression, but the effects of the storm are impacting operations in Georgia, particularly south Georgia due to downed trees and commercial power outages. Norfolk Southern is working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Customers in the area seeking information about service in this area should contact Central Yard Operations at (800)898-4296.
As the storm tracks north, other areas along the east coast are likely to be impacted. Heavy rains continue in north Georgia and are moving into South Carolina and North Carolina. Several areas are under flood and tornado watches.
For information on specific shipments, please contact the National Customer Service Center (800) 635-5768.

As an offshoot of the NS problems, the northbound Amtrak Crescent (9/7 departure from NOL) is now (9/8 at 4pm EDT) running over nine hours late. The last report has it just past Lynchburg, VA. It should have arrived in New York nearly two hours ago (2:02p).

Update II: Hurricane Frances
September 8, 2004
Operations in Georgia are returning to normal as the remnants of Frances continue to move northward although some areas are still experiencing delays due to commercial power outages. Heavy rains along the Appalachians have resulted in flooding, particularly in western North Carolina where there are several areas with tracks under water.
In addition there is a track washout near Coleman, NC (between Asheville and Hickory). Customers in the area seeking information about service should contact Central Yard Operations at (800) 898-4296.
The threat of heavy rain and flooding will move slowly into the Northeast and may have some impact on operations as the storm continues to move north. Customers with shipments to or from this region should expect some delays.
