Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, 3/3:
Council asking downtown residents to pony up for railroad arm
The Palestine City Council wants businesses in the downtown area to pony up to add a railroad crossing arm at Magnolia Street off of Spring Street.
When Public Works Director Tim Perry first approached the council about this project in August, the cost was $50,000, of which Palestine would pay half or $25,000.
The cost now is $79,270, and Palestine's share would be $39,935, Perry told the council Monday night.

The reason for the need of the second railroad arm is that cars tend to go around the arm at this railroad crossing. Adding an arm on the left-hand side would make this much harder to do.

The second railroad arm would also be part of Palestine's quiet zone.
