WMATA news release

For immediate release: September 30, 2022
Metro announces delay to Potomac Yard construction project south of Reagan National Airport; Future station opening delayed until 2023

Metro is extending the closure of six stations south of Reagan National Airport due to unexpected site conditions and remediation efforts for the future Potomac Yard Station. The announcement today comes three weeks before stations were scheduled to reopen to give our customers time to plan their trips accordingly.

Work to tie-in new tracks to the station, which was slated to conclude on Saturday, Oct. 22, will now end on Saturday, Nov. 5. Free shuttle bus service will continue to be available to customers through the extension following the same pattern that our customers are using today. Metroway - Potomac Yard line will continue to be free, and parking fees at Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn, and Huntington stations will continue to be waived. Click here to view full travel alternatives.

The complex process to ensure proper signal integration, build and connect new tracks to the future Potomac Yard Station, and complete all safety critical work necessary to operate service started three weeks ago. As site work got underway, crews discovered issues with the underlying soil that affected the structural stability of the ground beneath the tracks. Construction was stopped and a remediation plan was developed and implemented. This work was beyond the initial scope of the tie-in work. Reinforcing the ground below the tracks required removing any work already completed, excavating additional soil beneath 1400 feet of track, and installing new subgrade materials to provide the required stability.

Track construction and integration has now resumed on the site; however, due to the delays the shutdown will be extended for two additional weeks.

Regretfully, Metro announces that the new Potomac Yard Station will not open this calendar year. The delay in completing construction of the station is due to the contractor’s failure to meet the project delivery schedule. Metro will continue to work with the contractor to produce an achievable schedule and will provide an update by the end of this year.

“We are frustrated with these developments on the Potomac Yard Station project," said Executive Vice President of Capital Delivery Andy Off. "The team has been working around the clock to push the project delivery team to perform in accordance with the schedule. Recently, it has become clear that the published schedule will not be met, unfortunately delaying the opening of this important station. On behalf of our customers and the City of Alexandria, we apologize for this inconvenience. We will continue to work as quickly as possible to deliver a high-quality station, and we are doing everything within our power to move the project forward in a safe and responsible way.”

As always, Metro will continue to work collaboratively with the City of Alexandria and the contractor to resolve these scheduling issues and continue our commitment of transparency to the local community.

Potomac Yard Station will be located at the southern end of National Landing on Metro's Yellow and Blue lines between the existing Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Rd stations. This project was initiated by the City of Alexandria and will be funded by tax revenues and developer contributions generated by planned new development in the Potomac Yard neighborhood, as well as state grants and loans and regional sources. The station will provide a wide range of benefits for Alexandria and the surrounding communities, including walkable access to regional transportation systems for residents in the northeast area of the city. This will be Metro's second infill station in the system's history after NoMa-Gallaudet U Station opened in 2004.

Opening of Potomac Yard Metro station pushed to next year; track work to stretch into November

Metro says work on the Yellow and Blue lines that has shuttered stations south of Reagan National Airport will take two weeks longer than expected to complete — and the opening of the new Potomac Yard Metro station, in Alexandria, has been delayed until sometime next year.

This is the second delay in the opening of the Potomac Yard Metro station. Located near the sprawling Amazon headquarters development, the station was originally slated to open in April.

WMATA press release

For immediate release: December 13, 2022

Potomac Yard Metrorail Station expected to open in May 2023

New Alexandria station will be Metro’s 98th rail station

Today Metro announced a new timeline for opening the Potomac Yard Station in May 2023. The much-anticipated infill station is located in the City of Alexandria between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road stations on the Blue and Yellow lines.

“We are excited to have an opening in sight for Potomac Yard Station,” said Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke. “Our team, the City of Alexandria, and contractors are working hard to complete the station and we look forward to providing new transit service to this rapidly developing area.”

“While delayed longer than expected, it is exciting to start the countdown to opening Potomac Yard Station for our customers,” said Metro Board Chairman Paul C. Smedberg. “By adding this infill station to the Blue and Yellow lines, we are anchoring Potomac Yard as a hub for employment, education, housing, and recreation.”

Work to tie-in the station and new tracks with the rest of the Metrorail system concluded on Saturday, Nov. 5, and trains are now passing through the station without stopping. Metro continues working collaboratively with the City of Alexandria and the contractor to complete station construction. In addition, Metro and its safety partners will complete critical safety reviews and provide staff training prior to opening for passenger service.

This project was initiated by the City of Alexandria and is funded by tax revenues and developer contributions generated by planned new development in the Potomac Yard neighborhood, as well as state grants, loans and regional sources.

The station will provide a wide range of benefits for Alexandria and the surrounding communities, including walkable access to regional transportation systems for residents in the northeast area of the city. The station is expected to generate billions of dollars in new private sector investment over the long term and eventually support 26,000 new jobs and 13,000 new residents. New development immediately adjacent and north of the station is a mix of retail, residential and commercial development, including the new Virginia Tech Innovation Campus.

WMATA and City of Alexandria, VA joint press release

For immediate release: April 19, 2023
Metro and City of Alexandria announce Potomac Yard Station opening date

PY-GM-Mayor-Tour-4-19_2.jpg

The opening day for Metro's newest station, Potomac Yard, is set for Friday, May 19, 2023. Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke joined Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson to make the announcement while touring the Potomac Yard site.

"Our team is working hard to put the finishing touches on the station, and we look forward to welcoming customers on May 19th," said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. "This station opens a multitude of possibilities for those who live and work in Alexandria by providing a gateway to the region and all the city has to offer. “We appreciate the hard work and vision of the city to turn an idea more than 40-years in the making into reality, and we look forward to welcoming customers to our newest station."

The station, located in the fastest growing area of Alexandria, is between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road stations serving the Blue and Yellow lines. Potomac Yard will be Metro's 98th station and is Metro's second infill station, built between existing stations.

The station was initiated by the City of Alexandria and funded by tax revenues and developer contributions generated by planned new development in the Potomac Yard neighborhood, as well as state grants, loans, and regional sources. The addition of the station enhances connectivity to and from Alexandria, which has seen substantial population growth and new development in the last few decades.

"It's not cliché to say, in this instance, 'dreams really do come true,'" said Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. "Bringing Metro to Potomac Yard has been Alexandria's most significant economic development, transportation and climate initiative. While not always easy, the opening of this station is a monumental achievement for the City, WMATA, and its contractors. But more importantly, this station is the legacy of a legion of Alexandrians who never gave up the dream."

The station provides a wide range of benefits for Alexandria and the surrounding communities, including walkable access to regional transportation systems for residents in the city's northeast area. The station is expected to generate billions of dollars in new private sector investment over the long term and eventually support 26,000 new jobs and 13,000 new residents. New development immediately adjacent and north of the station is a mix of retail, residential and commercial development, including the new Virginia Tech Innovation Campus.

Work to tie-in the station and new tracks with the rest of the Metrorail system concluded in November 2022, and trains have passed through the station without stopping as the remaining work continues. Metro and its safety partners will complete critical safety reviews and provide staff training before opening for passenger service on May 19, 2023.

Alexandria and Metro have worked together to bring this station to life. During the next month, Metro will continue coordinating with its partners to ensure the station is ready to welcome customers.

Potomac Yard will be one of the first rail stations in North America to receive Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
