Northwest Indiana Times, posted 1/30:

South Shore aims to reduce travel times with express train

The South Shore commuter railroad will start an express train from South Bend in March that could be the wave of the future for the railroad, making the trip from there to Millennium Station in less than two hours.

Travel time from Dune Park would also be cut to under an hour on the train, as compared to the 1 hour and 19 minutes it takes now, and under 40 minutes from East Chicago.

"This certainly is the wave of the future for this railroad," railroad general manager Michael Noland said. "It's what people want and it's what the strategic plan can deliver."

Certainly nice to see this. Commuters from the most distant station stops will appreciate this long overdue improvement.  Hopefully the express train is an added train rather than turning an existing local train into an express; otherwise those at the bypassed stops would suffer the loss of one train.

South Bend (IN) Tribune, 6/5:

South Shore express having modest impact

Ridership up 5% on early morning runs

A few more passengers have been boarding the South Shore’s early morning trains since the commuter railroad started running express service in mid-March.

The railroad debuted the “Sunrise Express” on March 16 as a one-year pilot project to test the effect that limited-stop service would have on ridership.
