Feds, Norfolk Southern demand DOT-111 railroad tanker car safety improvements
DOT-111 tankers roll through northeast Ohio weekly
CLEVELAND - The National Transportation Safety Board has now placed DOT-111 railroad tanker cars on its "most wanted"" list of highway hazards.
According to an NTSB report DOT-111 tanker cars have tank jackets that are too thin to survive often enough during a derailment, and the housings for the top fittings are not effective in protecting against impact damage.

Norfolk Southern issued the following statement:
"We agree with those who believe there needs to be a higher federal safety standard for tank cars which carry hazardous materials, which is why Norfolk Southern has been advocating for higher standards for years. We’re advocates for thicker tank car jackets, thermal insulation, improved safety valves, and retrofitting or phasing out any tank car that doesn’t meet a higher standard as quickly and as feasibly as possible.
Norfolk Southern is a Common Carrier, which means we are mandated by federal law to haul hazardous materials. . . .
