Service Bulletin - Hurricane Frances
September 02, 2004 - CSX

Currently, Hurricane Frances is expected to hit the east coast of Florida with tropical storm force winds and heavy rains as early as 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3. Many uncertainties remain about the track of the storm, and plans will be updated based on changing information.

From Auburndale, Fla., south to Miami, all counties have closed their schools and all public transportation has been suspended for Thursday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Sept. 3. Our current plan is to operate between Auburndale and Miami until 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2. Amtrak’s P09002 will be the last northbound train from Miami, and it is scheduled to depart at 3 p.m. As P09002 clears, the signal department will begin removing and securing gates in a northward direction.

Tri-Rail has suspended operations for Thursday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Sept. 3.

Ballast trains are currently being staged at various locations from Montgomery to Hamlet. Generators, chain saws and other equipment have been staged throughout Florida, and private contractors are on call to help with removal of debris and restoration of CSXT lines in the aftermath of the storm.

At 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, from Okeechobee south, including Miami, train operations will be shut down.

At this time, the Tampa/Bone Valley area will continue operations through 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3.

Normal intermodal traffic will continue through Thursday night.

All precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of our employees, customers, and the public with minimum delay to shipments as we continue to monitor the progress of this storm.

CSXI and NS have informed BNSF that they have issued embargoes on all Florida-destined intermodal traffic until further notice. The embargoes will continue until the impact of Hurricane Frances has been fully determined.

As a consequence, effective immediately, BNSF will not accept any Florida-destined freight for CSX, NS and FEC locations. This includes Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and any other Florida locations.
