Miami, FL Herald, 7/16/17:

Can Miami-Dade afford more rail? Or will it settle for buses?

The fight over rail’s future in Miami-Dade may be coming to a head this summer.

Last year’s debut of the SMART transit plan revived hopes for the countywide expansion of rail first promised to voters during the 2002 referendum that created the half-percent transportation tax. But as the political and financial challenges of the multi-billion-dollar expansion plan have come into focus, some are suggesting Miami-Dade might be better off ditching new rail projects in favor of buses or other options.

Miami Mayor: No New Light Rail in the Works

In Miami-Dade’s ongoing (and surprisingly heated) rail vs. BRT battle, County Mayor Carlos Gimenez has come out strong for Team Bus. The Mayor has signed a $534 million proposal for a number of BRT routes that would “indefinitely defer the Metrorail expansion promised voters in 2002 during a referendum for a half-percent transportation tax that currently generates about $250 million a year,” according to the Miami Herald.

Miami Pols Want Their Promised Light Rail

It takes a little more than one hour for an express bus to travel 20 miles along the busway stretching down south Miami-Dade County. Politicians representing cities along that route want transit trips to speed up. Specifically, they want a light-rail line that would cost an estimated $1.5 billion to build.

Headline doesn't match the article.  The text is busway-focused, but I post anyway even though the link is off topic.  Sloan
