NS Service Alert:

[NSAlert] Hurricane Matthew

Norfolk Southern is currently anticipating inclement weather affecting the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coastal areas associated with Hurricane Matthew.  Weather advisories have been issued based on Matthew’s forecasted track.  Strong winds, heavy rainfall and potential flooding is expected in many coastal and low-lying areas.  The state of South Carolina has ordered evacuations of coastal areas effective 3:00pm October 6th.  Norfolk Southern is monitoring the storm closely and is taking precautions to protect employees, track, and shipments in these areas.

In preparation Engineering is staging resources, including ballast trains, equipment, and generators, and will be prepared to commence storm recovery efforts once it is safe to do so.  Norfolk Southern will be working with customers in these areas to identify switching needs and service curtailment. Customers should expect delays to affected areas that could last several days.  Customers with questions regarding local service should contact their Operations and Service Support, Unit Train, Automotive, or Intermodal representative.

Further details will be provided as this storm system develops and progresses across the regions.

The latest ETA and routing information is always available through Pacesetter and accessNS.

NS news release:

Norfolk Southern supports Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts in Southeast

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 11, 2016 – Norfolk Southern is donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross to assist with Hurricane Matthew relief efforts across five Southeastern states.

Hurricane Matthew brought heavy rains and flooding across NS’ service territory in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. More than 13,000 people in those states sought shelter in Red Cross and community evacuation shelters as the storm moved up the coast.

“Many of our Norfolk Southern employees and facilities are located in these affected areas, and Red Cross recovery efforts are timely, effective, and vital,” said James A. Squires, NS chairman, president, and CEO. “We want our employees, customers, and community neighbors to know that Norfolk Southern is there to help where it’s needed most.”

Norfolk Southern employs 9,500 railroaders in the five states and operates over 5,000 miles of railroad there. For the most part, NS train operations have returned to normal since the storm moved up the Southeast coast.
