With a tight connection at New London (NLC) between the arrival of eastbound Shore Line East train 3618 (1:07pm) and the departure of Northeast Regional 163 (1:18pm), I took a look at the history of 163 at NLC, and also at Boston and Providence (PVD). Regional 163 tends to be a little late at NLC. Examining trips from September 1 onward, 35 trips have times recorded at NLC (some trains did not record a time at NLC). The scheduled departure time is at NLC 1:18pm. - Of those 35 trips, the median departure time (half before, half after) was 1:26pm (19 minute connection). - The 10th percentile departure time (10% before, 90% later) was 1:21pm (14 minute connection). - Three of the 35 trips departed on-time or up to two minutes late. - Thirty-two of the 35 trips departed three or more minutes late. - Fifteen departed 10 or more minutes late. Departure from PVD is a good indicator for NLC. If the train is a few minutes late out of PVD, it will likely be a similar few minutes late at NLC. Checking the PVD actual departure of 163 that day will provide an indication of the actual departure time of 163 from NLC. Attached is the data.
