The Meridian (MS) Star, 4/19:

Our View: Please heed railroad crossing warning

Like everyone else, we were dismayed at the Wednesday afternoon death of Meridian resident Alpa A. Shah, whose SUV was struck by a train.

According to the Meridian Police Department, Shah drove around an active warning gate at Hawkins Crossing off Highway 11/80 and into the path of an Amtrak train, which struck her SUV, killing her instantly.

Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said flashing lights and bells at the crossing were functioning at the time of the fatal collision.

Our thoughts are with the family. Unfortunately, it is a tragedy that is all too common.

SNIP

We don't want to report on another death at a railroad crossing. Please, heed the warning signals.
