NICTD/South Shore Line news release:

Gary Metro Center Renovations to Impact South Shore Access to Platform

The Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) is beginning to renovate the Gary Metro Center.  As part of this work we were required to temporarily remove our Ticket Vending Machines located on the 2nd floor of the Metro Center.  We encourage South Shore passengers to use our convenient smartphone app as an easy to use alternative until the TVMs are reinstalled.  Passengers may also pay with cash ONLY on the train.

Skywalk Closure and Detour August 14-18

The contractor plans to temporarily close the skywalk connecting the Metro Center to our platform stairway and elevator as they repair the roof of the skywalk.  When the skywalk is closed passengers should use the stairway on the east side of Broadway to access the platform.  During this period, GPTC will provide shuttle service between the Metro Center and the Broadway platform entrance from 5 am - 10 am and from 3 pm – 7 pm.

When the skywalk is closed Gary Metro Center will not be accessible to passengers with disabilities.  We advise passengers with disabilities to use the East Chicago Station located at 5616 Indianapolis Blvd.

We regret any inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation as GPTC makes improvements to the Metro Center.

Gary Metro Center gets first upgrade since 1985 opening

Gary's tattered transportation hub is undergoing its first major facelift since it opened in 1985.

Workers are replacing floor and ceiling tiles, duct-taped stairs, lighting and roofing at the Adam Benjamin Jr. Metro Center at 4th Avenue and Broadway. It services the Gary Public Transit Corp. buses that run throughout the region, the South Shore commuter railway, and the Greyhound Bus Lines.
