Track owner says $5 million in repairs needed to make 37-mile Nickel Plate rail safe

 

 

The rail buffs who operated the Indiana State Fair Train for 30 years and the government agency that owns the tracks on which it ran are decoupling.

 

The Hoosier Heritage Port Authority is dropping the Indiana Transportation Museum as train operators on the 37-mile Nickel Plate route that runs between Tipton and Indianapolis.

 

The authority is seeking a new manager because it failed to reach an agreement with the museum on an estimated $5 million in track repairs and maintenance. The port authority wanted the museum to fix and clean sections of track it said were so dangerous that the fair train and Polar Bear Express were cancelled last year.

Indiana State Fair train operator wants to stay on track

 

The rail enthusiasts who run the annual Indiana State Fair train say they will fight plans to tear out the Nickel Plate tracks and replace it with a greenway.

Fair Train operators propose alternative to Nickel Plate Trail

 

 

FISHERS, Ind (WISH) – As Hamilton County communities explore ripping tracks to make a trail, the train excursion operators are proposing an alternative.

 

Since last summer, the trains at the Indiana Transportation Museum (ITM) have sat still. ITM volunteer and board member John McNicholas gave 24-Hour News 8 a look at the grounds Tuesday.

 

A feature of the property is the passenger cars that took people from Fishers to the Indiana State Fair. In 2015, more than 10,000 took it, and the excursion generated $700,000. “It was a record year for both ridership and revenue,” McNicholas said.
