With riders depending on Metro for essential trips, agency is developing plans to vaccinate staff

With a devastating surge in COVID-19 cases ongoing in Los Angeles County, Metro continues to run bus and rail service for essential trips. As we reported earlier this week, we are experiencing some staff shortages and missed trips due to employees missing work because they’re ill, caring for family members or in quarantine.

Metro experiencing staff shortages and canceled trips due to regional surge in COVID-19 cases

The number of new COVID-19 cases has exploded in Southern California over the past two months — and Metro, unfortunately, is feeling the impact on our bus and rail service due to staffing shortages. As a result, some bus and rail trips will likely be canceled each day over the next few weeks. For example, on Monday, Jan. 4, we had to cancel about 10 percent of trips.

Surge in COVID-19 poses challenge to Metro Rail projects

Another sign of the times: the significant local increase in COVID-19 cases poses a challenge to the five rail construction projects that Metro oversees. These projects include the three sections of the Purple (D Line) Extension, the Regional Connector Transit Project and the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project.

Mask dispensers now available on Metro buses and trains

Both Metro and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention require riders to wear face masks on public transit (except for those with a medical excuse).

To make it easier for riders who may have forgotten or misplaced their masks, Metro will be installing more than 2,000 mask dispensers on board our trains and buses, Metro Micro vehicles and at Metro Rail stations.

Universal City/Studio City and Civic Center/Grand Park station portals to reopen April 12

In an effort to reduce touchpoints and focus critical cleaning efforts where riders need it most, some of our redundant and underutilized entrances to B/D Line (Red/Purple) subway stations were closed early last year. However, as the COVID-19 situation in L.A. County continues to improve and ridership returns, staff have been working to safely reopen these portals as key destinations in those areas reopen.

COVID-19 update and Metro News; April 6, 2021

•Metro continues to offer essential trips. We’re running about 80 percent of our pre-pandemic service with bus service set to increase in June and then return to normal levels in September.

•Face masks/coverings are required to ride Metro unless you have a medical excuse. Mask dispensers are being installed in the Metro system.

•To the extent possible, please try to social distance when in our systems and on buses and trains.

•Please use the Transit app — Metro’s official app — for bus arrival info and crowding predictions.

•Virtual TAP cards are available on recent iPhones and Android phones. More info here.

•With the number of COVID-19 cases falling from the winter surge, L.A. County moved into the less-restrictive Orange Tier on Monday. Gov.  Newsom today announced he is aiming for a full reopening of the state on June 15.

LACMTA THESOURCE

Help keep Metro clean and safe

Screen-Shot-2021-09-22-at-1.09.16-PM.png

Metro has launched a new awareness campaign called “Keep Metro Clean and Safe” to protect employees and riders from COVID-19 and improve the customer experience by promoting shared responsibility and mutual respect.

As part of the campaign’s awareness efforts, we are inviting riders to be partners in creating a healthier, safer and more enjoyable experience. The “Keep Metro Clean and Safe” campaign focuses on three important rules:

  • Mask wearing. Metro will remind customers to do their part and wear a face mask. Masks should cover the nose and mouth and be worn at all times when using public transit per federal law.
  • Metro is a no-smoking zone. Customers will be asked to extinguish their cigarette or smoking device to help ensure the health of fellow riders.
  • Metro is a no-littering zone. Customers should throw all trash, including used face masks, into designated trash receptacles

See something that needs our attention?

While you do your part, we’ll do ours. Metro has recently deployed additional teams on the subway to focus on cleaning, and we’ve begun a midday bus layover cleaning pilot project at Terminal 28 (T28), a layover zone adjacent to L.A. Technical Trade College. The teams dispose of trash, clean up spills, remove graffiti and wipe down vehicle interiors.

Fares are coming back to LA Metro in early 2022

Shortly after the new year, LA Metro’s 22-month run of free bus rides and relaxed enforcement of train fares will come to an end, as the public transit agency resumes charging for rides.

Los Angeles Metro to receive $1.24 billion federal grant

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced a $1.24 billion award of American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).

American Rescue Plan transit funds are intended to help transit agencies around the country maintain service and keep workers on the payroll as communities continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. This award comes at a crucial moment as agencies nationwide are facing the challenge of a new variant.

L.A. Metro Source, 2/7/22:

Temporary bus and rail service adjustments begin Sunday, Feb. 20

Like so many organizations across the country, Metro has been facing staffing shortages in all areas of our operation since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Because of these shortages, Metro is making temporary service adjustments, effective Sunday, Feb. 20, to many of our bus and all rail lines in order to provide our riders with more reliable and predictable service.
