CSX Service Bulletin: Hurricane Ivan Recovery

Recovery from Hurricane Ivan continues in Alabama, Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle. The Pensacola area was hardest hit, with major damage to track, bridges and signals. Rail operations are suspended in the area, as six miles of track and eight bridges undergo major repairs.

Limited local service has been restored between Flomaton, Ala., and Pensacola, Fla., and between Milton, Fla., and Chattahoochee. Limited service has also been restored between New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., and between Mobile and Montgomery, with restrictions because of commercial power outages.

New Orleans interchange to and from western rail carriers is limited, and temporary rerouting has been established through Memphis, Tenn., East St. Louis, Ill., and Birmingham, Ala.

Traffic destined for or originating from locations between Pensacola/Goulding, Fla., to Chattahoochee remains embargoed.

Amtrak service that originates in New Orleans and goes east remains suspended until further notice.

Hurricane Jeanne

Hurricane Jeanne made landfall on Florida's east coast near Stuart, Fla., about midnight Saturday as a Category 3 storm. On Sunday, Sept. 26, the storm was following a westerly path across the state and is expected to turn slightly north and continue to the Gulf of Mexico and on to Florida's Big Bend area and north into Georgia overnight.

CSX facilities and crossings were secured in advance of the storm. Terminals and auto and intermodal facilities were secured and operations discontinued mid-day Saturday. Terminals in the Tampa and Bone Valley area were secured late Saturday, and rail service discontinued. CSXT's Savannah locations have likewise suspended service in advance of the storm.

The Florida East Coast Railway has issued an embargo notice for all traffic to, from or via all FEC Florida destinations or interchanges. CSX has not issued such a notice, but as conditions become clearer during the next one or two days, CSX may also be forced to issue a formal embargo.

Ballast trains are currently staged at various locations near Hamlet, N.C., Baldwin, Fla., and Augusta, Ga. Generators, chain saws and other equipment have been staged throughout the region, and private contractors are on call to help with removal of debris and restoration of CSXT lines in the aftermath of the storm.

Amtrak service to Florida's east coast is suspended; service from New York to Miami is suspended until Hurricane Jeanne passes.

Tri-Rail suspended service mid-day Saturday, Sept. 25, and will reassess restoration of service on Sunday and Monday.

All precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of our employees, customers, and the public with minimum delay to shipments as we continue to monitor the progress of this storm.
