OK, except that whoever wrote this story for AP doesn't know that BART trains are not commuter rail.

BART to Outfit Cameras on Every Train Car

BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost issued the following statement:

“BART has committed to install a working camera system on each and every train car as quickly as possible.  Staff is already working on funding options, a procurement plan, and deployment strategy.  Our riders and employees' safety is BART's top priority.

BART, like all forms of public transit, is a safe mode of transportation. Prior to this announcement, we utilized a robust surveillance system with cameras located in train cars, on platforms, in stations, and even on our individual police officers.  However, the ability of decoy cameras to deter crime depends on the principle of uncertainty.  Once that uncertainty was removed, our strategy was rendered ineffective.

BART's new Fleet of the Future trains already have cameras on all cars.  Now, both our existing and future cars will have security cameras.”

San Francisco Chronicle, 1/20:

BART to replace decoy cameras on trains with real ones

Days after acknowledging that most of the security cameras on BART trains were decoys but defending their use, transit agency officials said Wednesday they will phase out the fakes and replace them with working cameras.

The announcement came less than a week after The Chronicle revealed that the vast majority of what appeared to be cameras mounted on the ceilings of BART trains were dummies intended to fool riders, and that as a result the agency failed to capture video footage of a Jan. 9 fatal shooting of a man aboard a train at the West Oakland Station.

“There are already real cameras on some of the train cars,” said Alicia Trost, a BART spokeswoman. “Now we’re making sure every single camera works.”

KQED (Public Broadcasting) San Francisco, 7/19:

Top Transit Official Says BART Needs to Move Faster to Install Surveillance Cameras

BART needs to stop “tap dancing” around and quickly install surveillance cameras on all of its trains, the chairman of the Bay Area’s regional transit planning agency said after learning that the system was moving slowly in putting the devices in place.

“I don’t know what’s taking so long,” Dave Cortese, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, said in an interview. “I think there’s a genuine concern that BART isn’t able to move quickly enough on some of these basic maintenance- and security-type issues.”

In January, BART announced that it had begun the process of buying cameras for its cars after it was revealed that most of the current devices on its cars were decoys. That disclosure came after a fatal shooting aboard a train at the system’s West Oakland Station.

All BART Cars Now Have Working Cameras

The work to ensure that every train car in the BART fleet is outfitted with working security cameras is now complete.  BART set July 1st as a target to finish the camera installation process.  That goal has been met.

The new cameras bolster BART’s existing security infrastructure network which includes cameras on platforms, inside and outside stations, as well as on police officers themselves.   These cameras and digital recording devices provide high quality images from onboard BART trains. Each car has four cameras on board.

Now that every BART car is outfitted with a working camera, any rider who becomes the victim of a crime or witnesses a crime should please take note of the number of the car they were in.  That number is posted above the end doors of each car.  Having that number will make it much easier for investigators to track down the video associated with any report of criminal activity.

KTVU-TV Oakland, CA 6/28/17:

BART completes $1.4M installation of security cameras on every train

OAKLAND (Alex Savidge, KTVU staff) - About six months after it came to light that BART has security cameras that were either dummies or weren't working, the transit agency revealed on Wednesday that by the end of the day every train car in the fleet is outfitted with working technology.

Now, BART has cameras on platforms, inside and outside stations, and on the police officers themselves. Each car has four cameras on board.

“The installation of new digital cameras demonstrates our commitment to public safety,” said BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas said in a statement.  “These cameras will be an effective tool for solving crimes that occur on the BART system by helping investigators to identify suspects.  The devices will also serve as a deterrent to prevent some crimes from ever occurring in the first place.”

KPIX-TV San Francisco, 7/1:

BART Withholding Surveillance Videos Of Crime To Avoid ‘Stereotypes’

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — In the last three months, there have been at least three robberies on BART involving groups of teenagers.

“I think people are genuinely concerned — they are fearful about the stories that have come out about the recent attacks, the assaults, the thefts,” said Debora Allen, who is a member of the BART Board of Directors.

April 22: Forty to sixty kids boarded a train at the Coliseum stop and robbed seven passengers, beating up two;

June 28: A group of four kids assaulted a passenger and made off with a cell phone at Dublin; and

June 30: A woman on a train with about a dozen teenagers had her phone snatched by one them before the group got off at the Coliseum stop. Thankfully, a good Samaritan was on hand to retrieve the phone.

So far, BART has refused to turn over surveillance video for any of these incidents.
