UP Customer News:

Weekly Service Update

November 26, 2014

To Our Customers,

Looking across our network over the past week, we can see that winter storm Bozeman had an impact on operations. The first cold snap of each season typically causes issues like broken and separated rails. The first cold snap this year, which covered a broad swath of our network, caused 34 percent more occurrences than we experienced during the first cold snap of 2013. Despite the increase in occurrences, we experienced much less impact on velocity this year even though carloadings were significantly higher than they were during the first cold snap of 2013. We believe our winter weather preparedness helped us respond effectively to these challenges.

Below are some network statistics from last week:

  • Carloadings for the week ending Nov. 22, 2014, were 188,970, up nearly 3 percent compared to the same week in 2013. Fourth quarter carloadings to date are 6% percent higher than 2013.
  • AAR system velocity was 22.8 mph, down 0.4 compared to the previous week. As mentioned previously, winter storm Bozeman negatively impacted velocity, but we did see gains in the Pacific Northwest as fluidity improved in that area.
  • System terminal dwell was 31.7 hours, up 1 hour from the previous week.
In total, we had 296,900 cars online, which is flat with the previous week.
