VRE Train Talk, 3/1:

VRE Monitoring Winter Storm and Planning to Operate Full Service Monday March 2

As you may know, freezing precipitation has been falling all day. At this time we plan on operating a full and normal schedule on Monday, March 2nd. If we decide to alter the schedule, we will inform riders no later than 4 am.

In addition, we currently have crews treating the platforms.

There are lots of icy spots on walkways and roadways so please exercise caution during your entire commute.
As always, thank you for riding VRE

VRE "Systemwide Safety Bulletin," 3/1:

Systemwide Safe Travel Bulletin

Depending upon where you reside within the service territory, you are experiencing some significant ice accumulations. This brings some important safety topics to mind for tonight and (depending upon the temperatures) tomorrow. The three big ones are noted below, but keep reading for a really important safety message.

Hold Handrails!

It is extremely slippery out. Don't expect any surface to be free of ice at this point. Handrails may be cold and wet themselves but please make sure you hold them. Balance and stability are critical when your feet begin to hunt for traction beneath you.

Proper Footwear!

This is the type of ice where you may seriously need to consider ice-cleats to slip on over your shoes. As in any winter event, please place your dress shoes in your backpack and rely on some sturdy, rubber soled shoes at the minimum.

3points_crop.jpg

Three Points of Contact!

This is the cardinal rule anytime of the year, but never even think about climbing up or down stairs or anything outside without using three points of contact. We're so close to spring that we'd be willing to bet you don't want to be sitting idle, nursing an injury when it's finally beautiful outside, just because you were in a hurry.

Last....but not least!

If you venture out tonight to walk the dog, take out the trash, make a late night Wawa run or otherwise leave the safety of your own house, ask a friend or family member to tag along. If you must go alone; make sure you follow our advice above and make sure you have your cell phone with you, let someone know your plans and route and take the safe course in your decisions. Ice this thick and slick and temperatures hovering around freezing can cause you to fall quickly. Should you break or sprain anything out there in the darkness without someone there to help you, the results could be bad. Remember, any cell phone, whether it has a connected service or not can reach 911 provided you are in range of normal cell service. Please, stay safe!

This advisory was furnished as a courtesy of the Virginia Railway Express. VRE is committed to the safety and security of our passengers, employees and neighbors above all else and wishes to remind you of some important safety topics to help you assist us in keeping your commute as safe as possible. If you wish to report an emergency or suspicious activity, contact 911 immediately. If you wish to report an unsafe situation or other issue, please notify us immediately by calling 703.684.1001 or for less urgent matters you would like us to look into, email us anytime at Gotrains@vre.org
