Chicago Sun-Times, 10/9:

Bridge work to halt Amtrak service between Chicago and St. Louis but only after Cubs-Cards series

It may be the first time that a baseball game–or five–has affected the schedule of a major bridge rebuilding project.

Amtrak announced Friday that no trains will operate between Chicago and St. Louis from Oct. 17-31–after the National League Divisional Series between the Cubs and Cardinals–to allow for a “blitz” project that includes rebuilding and expansion of six bridges.

Union Pacific Railroad and its contractors will do the work on the bridges as part of ongoing improvements to Illinois’ high-speed rail route.

The State Journal-Register, Springfield, IL 11/2:

Ninth Street rail underpass reopens; Amtrak service not yet back to normal

A section of Ninth Street in Springfield reopened Monday after a month-long shutdown that included a major rail-bridge upgrade and removal of a center pier long considered a traffic hazard on the busy corridor.

Amtrak service interrupted by the construction is not quite back to normal as a result of other bridge upgrades on the Union Pacific line between St. Louis and Chicago.

"It was an interesting project. There's about 1 million pounds of structural steel there," said Steve Halverson, president of lead contractor Halverson Construction Co. of Springfield.
