University officials look at monorail link to proposed stadium

It's strictly at the brainstorming stage, but University of Nevada, Las Vegas consultants have floated the idea of extending the Las Vegas Monorail to a 42-acre site at Koval Lane and Tropicana Avenue to serve a potential UNLV football stadium and then extend the monorail to the Thomas & Mack Center and the rest of the UNLV campus.

Las Vegas, NV Review-Journal, 5/3/16:

Monorail to use interest money to kick-start expansion to Mandalay Bay

The Las Vegas Monorail has inched a little closer to becoming a mile longer.

Clark County commissioners voted Tuesday to allow the Las Vegas Monorail Company to pull from investment earnings on the $6 million account put in place to pay for its demise, should it ever fail.

In training for the Las Vegas Raiders.

The platform at the Las Vegas Monorail station at SLS Casino is practically empty around 11 a.m. on a blistering hot June day, the thermostat reaching above 110.

The next train arrives and a handful of tourists step aboard the air-conditioned car for the $5 ride. The train snakes behind the famed buildings of the Strip, passing Wynn, Venetian, Flamingo and other casino resorts before arriving at the final station at MGM Grand.

Poor planning hampered monorail ridership.  The convoluted routing plus the absence of a connection to the airport makes the service less attractive than bus or Uber.

Note the cockamamie XpressWest plan is still on life-support.  I don't see how that business model will work since development rights along right-of-way would be difficult to obtain.  Far better, as members of this board know, would be to get Uncle Pete (Union Pacific) to allow parallel trackage for higher speed rail to Fullerton.  Cost would certainly be much less than $8 billion.     Sloan

Las Vegas Monorail Company set for another push to expand

Clark County may soon give the Las Vegas Monorail Company permission to extend its route along the Strip.

After a nearly nine-month hiatus, the monorail company is scheduled to appear before county commissioners Wednesday to request land use permits fora 1-mile extension south from MGM Grand to the Mandalay Bay and Luxor resort and convention campus.

County leaders approve another measure to help monorail extension

On Tuesday, County Commissioners voted to set aside 4.5 million-dollars of room tax funds annually as a backup plan for financing of the one-mile monorail extension. This is money that is not guaranteed, but monorail officials see it as another "green light" to move forward with the extension.
