Amtrak struggles to recover from winter weather challenges
 
Trains cancelled in the southeast after significant delays earlier in the week

WASHINGTON –The well-publicized snowstorm that stranded motorists for 24 hours along Interstate 95 near Fredericksburg, Va., didn’t spare Amtrak trains operating through the region from cancellations and monumental delays. But the disruptions weren’t limited to the Northeast, as mudslides, cold temperatures, and snow caused route truncations and delays elsewhere.
 
In Virginia, trees laden with the heavy snow fell across both Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express commuter routes south of Washington.

Modified NEC and Southeast Service on Tuesday, January 4

Tuesday, January 4, 2022 11 AM ET

 
Following the winter storm that impacted the region, Amtrak has made the following temporary service adjustments for Tuesday, January 4:
  • Modified Northeast Regional, Silver Service, and Auto Train services south of Washington, DC
  • Modified Northeast Regional Service between Washington, DC and Boston
  • Piedmont Trains 73 & 74, Palmetto Train 90, and Auto Train 52 are cancelled

Additionally, due to a freight train derailment north of Baltimore, Amtrak trains operating on the Northeast Corridor can expect approximately 20-30 minute delays between Baltimore and Wilmington, Del.

Following the winter storm that impacted the region, Amtrak has made the following temporary service adjustments for Wednesday, January 5:
  • Modified Northeast Regional service between Norfolk, Va., Washington, D.C., New York and Boston
  • Silver Service/Palmetto trains 90, 92 & 98 are cancelled

Customers with reservations on trains that are being modified will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day. Amtrak will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
