LIRR Train Derails in Brooklyn; 103 People Hurt

The train derailed at the busy Atlantic Terminal at rush hour; all of the injuries were considered minor

Long Island Rail Road train derailed at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn at the height of Wednesday's morning rush, injuring more than 100 people and riddling the track area with shattered glass and debris.

Officials say 103 people were hurt when the train from Far Rockaway struck the bumping block at the terminal's track 6 around 8:30 a.m. The train went up and over the block; the impact knocked the wheels of the first car and one other axle off the rails, MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast said at the scene.

LIRR Commuter Train Crashes in Brooklyn; Injuries Reported

A Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) commuter train crashed at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, New York, this morning, leaving at least 76 people with non-life-threatening injuries.

The worst injury is believed to be a broken leg, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference this morning.

Cuomo said the train did not stop before the track's bumping block but it was traveling as a "fairly low rate of speed."

There will be an investigation to find out what happened and why the operator didn't stop the train, he added.

An LIRR passenger told New York ABC station WABC that said she heard a big thump, describing the scene as total pandemonium. She said passengers were falling on top of each other, screaming and crying.

103 injured in Long Island Rail Road derailment in Brooklyn

A Long Island Rail Road train derailed during Wednesday morning's rush hour at the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, injuring 103 people, authorities said.

The cause of the derailment was not known.

Around 8:30 a.m., the train from Far Rockaway struck and went over a bumper, which is intended to stop the train in an emergency. The wheels of the first car and one other axle derailed, MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast said at the scene, according to WNBC.

The National Transportation Safety Board said investigators were en route (emphasis added) to the scene. CNBC has reached out to the FBI and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the LIRR, for comment.

“The train came in and hit the so-called bumping block and went by it for a few feet,” Cuomo said at the scene. He said the train hit the block “at a fairly low rate of speed.”

The investigation will focus on “why the operator didn’t stop the train before it hit the bumping block,” the governor said.

A Long Island Rail Road train that crashed in Brooklyn on Wednesday was going more than twice the speed limit when it slammed into a train station, injuring more than 100 people, federal investigators said on Thursday.

The train was traveling at more than 10 miles per hour when it hit the end of the tracks at Atlantic Terminal, where the speed limit is 5 m.p.h., said Ted Turpin, an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board.
