MBTA, take note: No other major commuter rail closes for whole weekend

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s new proposal to save money by eliminating commuter rail service on weekends would make it unique among the 10 busiest commuter rail systems in the country.

No other major commuter rail closes for whole weekend

Not exactly true.

VRE (Virginia - Washington, DC) never operates on weekends.

SunRail in the Orlando area doesn't run on weekends except for special events.

WES in the Portland area does not run weekends.

Sounder in Seattle?  No weekends (except some sports specials).

Baker says Commuter Rail service cuts should be 'last resort'

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is finding out the MBTA's troubles go beyond the occasional delayed train.

The latest headache is a $42 million budget gap and a proposal to stop commuter rail service on the weekends for a year to help close the hole.

Column in Wicked Local, Kingston, MA, 3/18/17:

T management clueless on weekend commuter rail

Weekend commuter rail is under the gun because of its "high subsidy per ride" and low ridership. However, amid all the rhetoric, never once has the T looked at why customers choose to drive to Boston weekends instead of taking the train.

Statehouse News Service via Worcester (MA) Business Journal, 4/11:

T considering ways to close $50M deficit

On the menu for MBTA officials seeking to further shrink the agency's roughly $50 million structural deficit are elimination of same-day booking for The Ride paratransit service, savings in commuter rail weekend service and the introduction of alcohol ads onto the system - a source of controversy in the past.

Michael Abramo, the MBTA's chief financial officer, said the ads would appear on digital billboards and only run at certain times of day to avoid beaming their pro-booze messages at children traveling to and from school. A presentation Abramo made to the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board on Monday reported that peer transit agencies - in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and elsewhere - accept alcohol ads.
