SEPT. 21, AS OF 1:00 P.M. EDT:

AMTRAK TO RESUME SOUTHEAST/FLORIDA SERVICE
Delays expected along Auto Train & Palmetto routes

Amtrak plans to resume some service between the Washington area and Florida on Monday, but is telling passengers to prepare for delays while the train operates through areas with limited commercial electric power in the wake of Hurricane Isabel.

On Monday, Amtrak will operate the Auto Train, which transports passengers and their vehicles to and from Lorton, Va., near Washington, and Sanford, Fla., near Orlando.

Although commercial electric power is still out at the Lorton terminal, Amtrak crews are powering the depot using a locomotive.

Also on Monday, Amtrak will originate the Miami-Jacksonville-New York Palmetto (train 90) in Miami.

Both the Auto Train and the Palmetto are expected to encounter delays of up to three hours or more in the Richmond, Va., area, where power outages have disrupted track-side signals and grade crossing warning devices along the route owned by CSX Transportation.

On Sunday, Amtrak restored all east-west services between Chicago and New York City and Washington, subject to intermittent delays due to power outages.

On Saturday, Amtrak restored Keystone services in Pennsylvania, along with the Crescent (trains 19 & 20) between New York-Washington and New Orleans, via Atlanta, and service within North Carolina on the Carolinian (trains 79 & 80).  The Carolinian will operate only between Charlotte and Raleigh on Monday.

Amtrak restored all services in the Northeast Corridor on Friday and the regular schedule of trains is being operated between Washington and Boston, via New York.

While there's really nothing new in the release, nonetheless here's the Monday 5:00 PM update:

I realize that conditions are constantly changing as the affected area strives to recover from the damage. Still, it's interesting that AMTRAK has put out all these updates, several per day, keeping people informed. Chalk up another one for Mr. Gunn; I am sure under previous administrations they would have let passengers guess for themselves which trains are running.

If they were able to abide by what they said in the last few updates, then I would expect the following on Tuesday. The counterpart northbound runs for 93 and 85, which are respectively 84 and 86, will originate in Richmond for New York & Boston as usual. But I would also expect Train 94 to originate in Washington since it uses the equipment that terminated there off 95 tonight.

You might also have some "advance" sections of trains running along the NEC, particularly in advance of the above 84 & 86, since there is no way they are going to get through Virginia and into Washington in order to leave on time from Washington, DC. Otherwise, it would severely disrupt the hourly pattern of Regional service. It would not surprise me to have an "advance" 84 leave Washington on time, and then when the real 84 finally makes it to Washington, it would assume the passengers of whatever timeslot it falls into when it proceeds north on the NEC to New York.

I think AMTRAK is putting together whatever they can in order to move people along the corridor, expecting the Virginia trains to be late. Yesterday when I rode Train 163, it had two Business Class cars (one near each end of the train), and two cafe cars at different locations on the train. The front BC car and cafe were just being used for extra coach seating, while the rear ones served their normal functions.

There was also a 1:00 PM update, but it stated the same things as the 9:00 AM update. Therefore I didn't bother to post it, but I felt that the 5:00 PM sort of closed out the day so I did post that one.

I do agree however, that it is good that Amtak has made one heck of an effort to keep people informed. I also noted in the VRE story posted on this board here, that they too were praising Amtrak for keeping them informed and working with them to provide service. :)
