Imagine not having to duel with tractor-trailers on the highway. Or not driving at all, sitting in comfort as a train speeds you to work.

It could happen with the Texas Department of Transportation's proposed Trans-Texas Corridors - about 40 years from now.

We really haven't been here before.

Previous proposals to bring high-speed rail to Texas were more or less top-down efforts meant as much to sell trains and rail cars as to move people around the state.

But the Texas High Speed Rail and Transportation Corp. is different. It brings together elected officials along possible rail corridors, and it emphasizes the movement of people.

TxDOT promoting Trans-Texas Corridor

The Texas Department of Transportation is holding public meetings across the state to get citizen input for a proposed Trans-Texas Corridor. The legislative, futuristic concept would include a network of roads, rail and gas, electricity and data lines to connect highly populated areas of the state with the rest of Texas.
