Winter Storm Jonas

Jan 21, 2016

Winter storm Jonas is expected to impact a broad area of the Norfolk Southern network from the mid-South and Ohio Valley to the East Coast over the next several days.  The storm will bring high winds, ice, and up to 24” of snow in some locations.  We are requesting customers to expedite the pickup of their units from intermodal facilities in advance of the storm.

All terminals remain open pending weather conditions, and we will provide further updates as the situation with the storm develops.

Customers are strongly advised to review Department of Transportation information for updates regarding local road conditions.

Winter Storm Jonas - Update

Jan 23, 2016

Severe weather conditions continue to adversely impact extensive portions of our rail network, especially in the northeast. This will result in service delays of 24 to 48 hours for shipments originating from or destined to our Northeast facilities.

Due to the blizzard-like conditions our Baltimore, Greencastle, Harrisburg, and Rutherford facilities will close immediately and will reopen tomorrow at 6:00am Sunday, January 24th

While some of our facilities remain open, we are curtailing some train operations due to weather. Our Bethlehem, Croxton, Erail, and Morrisville facilities are being severely impacted by the storm, and to mitigate customer delays associated with the severe weather, we will look to extended free time at terminals affected by the severe weather.

Customers are strongly advised to review Department of Transportation information for updates regarding local road conditions. As conditions improve, customers are encouraged to pick-up available units from our terminals to alleviate congestion.

Winter Storm Jonas – Update 2

Jan 24, 2016

Due to the extreme winter weather conditions caused by Winter Storm Jonas, train service into and out of Baltimore, Bethlehem, Croxton, Erail, Greencastle, Harrisburg, Morrisville, and Rutherford has been severely impacted.  As a result of snow accumulations, freezing temperatures, and blizzard-like conditions many roadways have been and will be impassable.

Our Intermodal facilities are open and we are operating trains and loading and unloading containers and trailers to the extent allowed by heavy snow accumulations. Customers should expect delays up to 48 to 72 hours for freight moving to and from the aforementioned mid-Atlantic and northeast Intermodal facilities.

We realize that most of our customers are being affected by these same issues.  We do ask that, as soon as practical, customers begin pulling freight as quickly as possible from these terminals in order to keep them fluid.

NS Service Alert, 2:07 pm 1/25:

Update on Operations after Impact of Winter Storm Jonas

Norfolk Southern operations in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast areas have been severely impacted after heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions and sub-zero temperatures in association with Winter Storm Jonas.  Although the storm has diminished, operations are extremely limited throughout the Northeast corridor, in particular between Wilmington and Baltimore. Traffic moving into the Conrail area within the state of New Jersey has been reduced to allow for recovery efforts. Areas in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania are recovering slowly. Customers should expect delays of 24-72 hours on traffic moving through these areas.
