CSX: Three Different Chemicals Leaked After Train Derailment

A 175-car train traveling from Cumberland, Maryland to North Carolina derailed in Northeast D.C.

A CSX freight train carrying hazardous material derailed near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station early Sunday, sending 14 cars off the tracks and spilling hazerdous material from three of them, according to CSX.

There is no estimate of how long it will take to clean up the spilled chemicals and upright the derailed trains, a spokesperson for CSX said at a news conference Sunday evening.

Sodium hydroxide leaked from one of the derailed tanker cars, CSX spokeswoman Kristin Seay said. No one was hurt.

Another derailed tank car was leaking a non-hazardous calcium chloride solution. Common applications for the chemical include brine for refrigeration plants, ice and dust control on roads and the removal of water through chemical means.

A third derailed car was seeping ethanol from the base of a valve, Seay said. CSX said the ethanol has been contained and all leaks have been sealed.

The Washington Post, 5/2:

In aftermath of derailment, D.C. officials turn focus to CSX and its cargo

A day after a CSX train derailed in Northeast Washington, leaking hazardous substances along a busy rail corridor, local officials and activists turned their attention to the transportation company responsible, while emergency personnel continued to work clearing the wreckage.

By early Monday afternoon, CSX Transportation was in the process of removing the damaged cars from the site, and all the tank cars had been offloaded, D.C. fire emergency officials said. Officials said all of the leaks had been contained but provided no clues into the cause of the wreck.

SNIP

In addition to the inconvenience to those who depend on the rail corridor for travel, the derailment also revived long-standing concerns about freight trains carrying hazardous materials through the nation’s capital.

Surveillance video from Metro platform captures CSX train derailment

WASHINGTON - A massive cleanup effort is ongoing after a CSX freight train derailed along Rhode Island Avenue in Washington D.C. on Sunday morning.

CSX is now reporting more cars than they originally thought went off the track. While they are making progress in clearing the site, it has been causing delays for some passenger rail lines such as Metro and MARC. The derailment is also raising concerns when it comes to the hazardous materials being transported through the nation’s capital.

On Monday, Metro released surveillance video of the CSX train derailment that happened at around 6:40 a.m. Sunday from one of its cameras on the platform of the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood station.
