Man jumps free from car as train smashes into it at Devonport crossing in Tasmania's north-west

 

 

In short: A train and car collided in Devonport on Wednesday morning, with the car driver narrowly escaping his vehicle in time.

 

TasRail says it believes the car drove onto the tracks to avoid an obstacle and became stuck.

 

What's next? Tasmania Police is investigating the cause of the crash.

 

A man has had a lucky escape, jumping out of his car before it was hit by a train at Devonport, in Tasmania's north-west.

 

The dramatic incident happened at Stony Rise Road at 6am on Wednesday. 

 

Police said the driver jumped out of their white Toyota Hilux before the train pushed the vehicle 60 metres along the track.

The driver of a ute that was hit by a freight train on the north-west coast says he became stuck on the track after swerving to avoid a wallaby.

Speaking to 7 Tasmania, the unharmed driver Rob Brown said local council workers were quick to alert him to the oncoming train.

 

“They tried to move it, but they couldn’t move it,” he said.
