Council raids railroad office

Members of the Ely City Council and Railroad Board of Trustees entered a closed railroad office through the building’s second floor windows Tuesday afternoon in order to unlock the front door to let an auditor inside.

According to Ely Mayor Melody Van Camp, the auditor came up from Las Vegas on Tuesday to begin gathering documentation for a forensic audit approved by the council at a prior meeting.

After completing an investigation into the matter, the White Pine County Sheriff’s Department said in a released statement that “the allegations of burglary and trespassing are unfounded at this time” due to the city being the owners of the historical railroad foundation after it was gifted from Kennecott Copper in 1987, which includes the office building in question.

The Ely (NV) Times, 5/1:

Control of railroad could shift hands after upcoming special meeting

The Ely City Council and Railroad Board of Trustees might completely walk away from having a controlling stake in the White Pine Historical Railroad Museum and Nevada Northern Railway according to their latest agenda, posted Wednesday morning.

The trustees will hold a special public meeting inside the Armory on May 4 at 5 p.m. to vote on an agenda item that would grant and reassign the trustee’s “control and responsibilities” of the railroad to the foundation’s management board.  .  .  .
