GlobeSt.com, 6/19:

Amtrak Gateway Program: No Choice, Rail Exec' Says

WEST ORANGE, NJ-There’s really no choice about whether to undertake the $15 billion Gateway Program that will double rail capacity and unstick the service bottleneck between New Jersey and New York City, says Amtrak’s chief of development for the project.

“Something has to happen in the Northeast corridor,” Robert LaCroix told a roomful of commercial real estate executives at a NAIOP session at Mayfair Farms here Tuesday. “It is going to happen, because: What are the choices?”

The Gateway Program, begun last year with federal planning funds, will increase track, tunnel, bridge and station capacity and update the current old and over-used infrastructure.

Clock ticking on Hudson crossings, Amtrak warns

The end may be near for the New York region's cross-harbor rail tunnels, with no good alternative in sight.

The ARC tunnels that were killed by Gov. Christie were supposed to add to capacity by creating a new entry into New York City from New Jersey. They were not intended to replace the existing tunnels. But as many of you know I was in favor of the cessation of the project because of what it had become. So much had been compromised and taken away (including direct access to the existing Penn Station) that it was only a shadow of what had originally been proposed. The ARC tunnels would not have been much help to Amtrak, who would have needed the capability to operate THROUGH Penn Station to Sunnyside Yard and New England. And now if it is true that the existing tunnels may be nearing the end of their useful lives, it has to be crunch time as far as building what is needed to both add capacity and replace what exists now.

NJBiz.com, 5/25:

EDITORIAL: Time to support Amtrak's Gateway solution

The bad news keeps on coming for NJ Transit.

In the same month the agency disclosed it lost $5.6 million on the Super Bowl — on the same night when its performance was called into question more frequently than that of the Broncos — Amtrak, with which NJ Transit shares its most-traveled track, estimated its Hudson rail tunnels may have another 20 years left on the odometer.

That's not really a surprise to those who commute into New York, who are well used to the kinds of delays that typify a rail ride into the city. But since the United States and long-term transportation infrastructure planning go together like HealthCare.gov and Internet Explorer, it's no surprise that there's been no news of how to respond to this challenge.

SNIP

The state should put its resources behind Amtrak's Gateway solution, which should prove a real estate boon and solve quality-of-life issues for commuters. Time will tell if it gets done before the tunnels have to be closed for good.

More.

Amtrak: New tunnels needed after Sandy damage

NEW YORK – Structural problems in the 104-year-old Hudson River tunnels were exacerbated by 13 million gallons of salt water that flooded them after superstorm Sandy, an event that Amtrak officials confirm will require closing the old tubes for a year for a complete rebuilding.

Progressive Railroading, 10/2/14:

Amtrak repairs to Sandy-damaged tunnels to limit rail service into NYC

A new engineering report detailing damage to two Amtrak tunnels leading to New York City recommends taking the tunnels out of service for extended periods to repair damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

WABC-TV, ABC-7 in New York, NY, 10/2/14:

Amtrak tunnel repairs reignite calls for new East River construction

Commuters will soon experience another slowdown on the road to recovery from Superstorm Sandy.

Amtrak says it will have to cut back use of the East River tunnels for at least a year as the damage is repaired.

Cuomo declines to take up New York’s Amtrak issue

Yesterday, Amtrak briefed reporters on a serious problem facing the region: the dangerously bad state of its cross-Hudson tunnels, which were already in suboptimal condition before Hurricane Sandy inundated them with salt water.

Well at least Cuomo is consistent with his ho-hum attitude towards rail transit. He killed light rail across the Tappan Zee Bridge too. :(

AP via The Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA, 10/6:

Christie defends pulling plug on tunnel project

TRUMBULL, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie is again defending his decision to pull the plug on a Hudson River tunnel project after Amtrak warned its existing tunnels are in desperate need of repairs.

SNIP

But speaking at a campaign stop in Connecticut Monday, Christie said he "totally" stands by his 2010 decision to scrap a project known as Access to the Region's Core - or ARC - because his state would have been on the hook for any cost overruns.

NEW COMMISSIONER CALLS FOR TRANSPORTATION TAX, NEW TUNNEL, EXPANDED LIGHT RAIL

To new Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox, the challenge is clear, and so is the solution: After years of “taking a Band-Aid approach to everything,” New Jersey’s transportation system is in crisis. The only way out is to raise taxes to replenish the soon-to-be-empty Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) and build a new rail tunnel under the Hudson
