Montreal’s $6.3-billion rail project to get under way with SNC overseeing construction

Montreal's biggest public transportation project in 50 years is officially in the starting blocks. Canada's SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. and five partners will build it. France's Alstom SA and SNC-Lavalin will equip it. Now, its promoter, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, has to prove it can run down the track.

It's nice to see Montreal joining the light rail fraternity.  Back in 1959, the city got rid of its traditional streetcar system in 1959.  Part of the fleet consisted of four open air trolleys with tiered seating that Montreal Tramways used for sightseeing excursions.  Both Seashore Trolley Museum and Connecticut Trolley Museum have each preserved preserved one of these cars.  Here's a photo from Seashore's collection.

Montreal Gets Light-Rail Plans in Order

After hitting pause last year, the company financing Montreal’s long-anticipated light rail project has awarded a contract — meaning that the electric train now has an updated price tag and anticipated completion date of 2021. The Canadian Press reports that the transit project now has an anticipated cost of $6.3 billion — about $300 million more than the original price tag. SNC-Lavalin is part of the two consortiums that will build the infrastructure and furnish the trains.

MONTREAL — Montreal’s new light rail project connecting the city to its suburbs and its international airport got the federal green light, with the line expected to open by 2021, The Canadian Press reports.

The light rail project will now cost $6.3 billion — $300 million more than the original price tag — and is expected to be ready by the summer of 2021, instead of 2020.

The plan, which was first announced in January 2015, has been slightly changed and will now include 26 stations, one less than originally planned, along an approximately 41-mile automated light rail network. For the full story, click here.

Global News (Canada), 3/23/18:

More questions about future of Montreal’s electric train project

More questions are being raised about the future of the electric train network for greater Montreal.

The sprawling mass-transit system which covers more than 67 kilometres of track is coming under fire for encouraging urban sprawl and creating a monopoly in the mass-transit system.

Some city councillors are concerned the light-rail electric train system, known as the REM, will become a monopoly as an internal agreement between a subsidiary of Quebec’s Pension Fund Manager, CDPQ-Infra, and other transit agencies is becoming more and more public.

Construction begins on Montreal light-rail network as chorus of concern grows

Ground was broken Thursday on Montreal's $6.3-billion light-rail network, but enthusiasm about the project has dampened significantly amid worries of its political, environmental and economic impact.

http://www.cbc.ca/ne...grows-1.4617428

October 21, 2019 is Election Day for Canadians.  I suspect that the above project is one of several that current President Justin Trudeau will leverage in his re-election bid against two other contenders.  All three candidates are quite young.  Currently Trudeau is 47 and his two opponents are both 40.  Infrastructure plays well with constituents.  That's why incumbents have an extra "bump" in election years.

Now, back on topic; light rail will be a good complement to Montreal's Metro provided it has freedom from auto and truck traffic.  Sloan
