But remember that the major component of this project is essentially the righting of a wrong -- that is, transitizing a commuter rail line that should have been rapid transit from the start.  Those looking at a map of the Montreal Metro notice that there is no #3 Line, and no Red Line, which this was supposed to be originally.

 

So looking at this from the outside, is it really a "new" project, a replacement, or building of what should have been built many years ago?  Unfortunately, in modern dollars, while light rail is more affordable, but keeping the same technology in heavy rail Metro might have been a better choice to minimize forced transfers.

REM construction will slow commuter train service through Mount Royal tunnel

 

 

As work on the new Réseau express métropoltain (REM) progresses, part of the Mount Royal tunnel will be reduced to one track next month, which make all trips through the tunnel about five minutes longer.

Elevated REM stations spark privacy concerns among West Island residents

 

 

 

A large hedge on Cérès Street in Dollard-des-Ormeaux gives condo residents some privacy from the nearby train tracks and the Sunnybrooke train station.

 

The shrubbery blocks passengers on the train from seeing into their backyards — but residents worry that will no longer be the case once the station for the new REM light-rail system is built.

   Extended light-rail line in Montreal will be one of the longest in the world  

 

 

The original is so good it deserves a sequel … even though the first is still under construction. Officials in Montreal have decided to expand the REM light-rail project currently being built, making the line one of the largest automated transit networks in the world when complete.

The REM light rail system might have been pitched as a new jewel in Montreal's public transit crown, but two architectural firms have found it so ugly to the eye that they've stepped down, according to a Journal de Montreal report.

    REM station at Trudeau Airport receives C$500 million in federal and provincial financing  

 

 

A series of grants and loans provided by the government of Canada and province of Quebec will provide a total of C$500 million (US$398.5 million) to construct the planned Réseau express métropolitain (REM) station at the Montréal-Trudeau International Airport.
