Las Cruces, NM Sun-News, 7/28/10:

It has to start with small steps by city leaders in Las Cruces and El Paso, but the goal is to someday provide commuter rail service between the cities.

Here's that story.

Conversations on commuter rail service to El Paso begin

Commuter rail service between Las Cruces and El Paso is a long way down the track — and may never get out of the station — but a local transit agency is starting initial conversations about the possibility of connecting the two cities and the communities in between.

Another benefit of the proposed commuter rail project is reduced environmental impact on the Rio Grande River.  Expanded highway can exacerbate flooding as well as contribute to pollution run-off by petroleum products from cars.  A railroad right-of-way offers plenty of drainage through its ballast and its carbon output is minimal.

Running to Las Cruces is a start, but when Richardson was governor of New Mexico there was a plan to extend Rail Runner from Belen down to El Paso.  A new administration killed that idea.  Hopefully a smaller step to Las Cruces will prove politically palatable.
