The Charleston (WV) Gazette, 8/21:

Takeover of Cass railroad still in the works

State Rail Authority members had planned to discuss and possibly vote on a proposal from the Division of Natural Resources for the rail authority to take over railroad operations at the Cass Scenic Railroad on Thursday.

However, the authority had to remove discussion of an agreement with the DNR from its agenda, when the draft proposal never arrived.

Butler said the intent of the agreement is to have an agency with expertise in operating railroads handle the railroad side of Cass, while the DNR would continue to operate the restaurant, accommodations and other facilities at the state park.

Also, Ruby noted, “A recent audit shows that Cass needs substantial maintenance.

”One of the functions of the Rail Authority is to obtain federal grants to expand or maintain railroad operations in the state.

AP via The Herald-Dispatch, Huntington, WV, 12/27:

Officials: W.Va. railroad transfer to go smoothly

CHARLESTON — Officials say the transfer of operations for Pocahontas County's historic Cass Scenic Railroad to the State Rail Authority is expected to go seamlessly.

The authority already operates two other state-owned railroads: the West Virginia Central Railroad and the South Branch Valley Railroad. The transfer is set to go into effect Jan. 1.

New-look Cass Railroad nearing start-up

CASS, W.Va. — The West Virginia Central Railroad is preparing for the first full season of operation of the Cass Scenic Railroad.

Last year the Department of Commerce transferred the operation of the historic mountain rail line from the State Parks to the state Rail Authority. They have now added it to an agreement with the private vendor and the first of the new trips will soon be leaving the station.

John Smith, general Manager of the operation, said adding the Cass Railroad to their Cheat Mountain Salamander and the Tygart Flyer operations is a perfect tie in, literally because they are tied in.

“We’re building on what they’ve already done in the past,” Smith said Tuesday. “We’re adding the connectivity that West Virginia Central has with Cass to have all sorts of interesting venues.”

The standard runs to Whittaker Station and Bald Knob will still be offered, but there will also be options for a transfer and overnight stay.
