Progressive Railroading, 7/30/12:

Last week, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the city acquired the third and final section of the High Line from CSX Corp. The transaction is a major step toward preserving the entire historic elevated railway and transforming it into public open space, Bloomberg said in a prepared statement.

I finally got the chance today to walk this thing, with the new nyc7.jpg  station making the northern end easier to get to.   Very nice part of the city heretofore unseen by me.  At some points one forgets they are in Manhattan with the lush greenery around the path.  Some parts of the path have rail preserved into the walkway, though expertly scaped so that nobody trips over it.  There is one section where you can legally walk on what looks like a real railroad, with ties and ballast.  I only went one way, south, from 34th Street until the viaduct dead ends at Gasvenoort.  Then walked over several blocks to 8th Ave./14th Street, and took an nyce.jpg  train back to Penn Station.
