For the New York RailFest 2018, where should we meet each morning?
On Saturday, 1/13/18, we start out at the PATH 33rd Street station at Herald Square. Rather than meeting in Penn Station and walking together the long block on 32nd Street, we could just meet in the PATH station, just outside the fare payment area. We have assembled there before. This area is accessed from the street from subway entrances at 32nd & 6th or 32nd & Broadway, or at other corners 2 or 3 blocks north of there along 6th Avenue or Broadway. It is also directly connected underground from the D F N Q R trains (the B, M, & W are not available on weekends) if you can arrive here by subway. Our train leaves at 9:15 AM; we probably will board before that, so be there by 9 AM the latest.
Sunday we start at 8:38 AM from 34th Street/Penn Station. Best place to meet is where we have met before in Penn Station by the LIRR waiting room, which is at the bottom of the escalators that lead down from the NJT concourse and the main concourse that leads to the main exit at 32nd Street/7th Avenue. We should leave this point by 8:30 to walk to and access the 1 subway, so try to meet by 8:15 AM. It's a long day, so ensure you have used necessary facilities beforehand .
On both days, we will leave the start points at the planned time in the itinerary. However, with subways we can end up ahead of schedule. At the endpoint stations, if a train is set to leave before the time set forth in our itinerary, we will take it to minimize our time out in the cold. Once ahead, we generally remain ahead of schedule so if you are planning to join us after the morning start times, it is best to contact us to find out our status. On the subways it may be possible for you to short-turn somewhere to meet us. However keep in mind that texting and phone service might not be at its best on underground portions of the subway system.
The Hudson and New Haven Lines trips should be on schedule. Only 25 minutes was left between trains at Grand Central Terminal. Should we be running late on the inbound train, and still have a chance at making the outbound train, we could switch at Harlem/125th Street. If you are first joining us for the outbound trip from GCT, you would still board the outbound train that departs 4:05 PM. IF the group totally misses this outbound train, we have another one half an hour later, but would need to readjust our plans for the Amtrak train after dinner, or take Metro North back to New York City.
