Mexico City subway overpass collapses, killing at least 23 and injuring dozens

 

 

(CNN)An overpass carrying a subway train collapsed in Mexico City late Monday, killing at least 23 people, including children, according to local government officials.

 
At least 70 people have been hospitalized, seven of whom are in serious condition, officials added.
 
The train was traveling on an elevated part of the city's rapid transit system on the newest Line 12, also known as the Golden Line, when part of the overpass collapsed onto traffic below, Mexico's Secretariat of Risk Management and Civil Protection said.

A Mexico City subway train overpass collapsed onto a busy road below on Monday night, killing at least 27 people, including children, authorities said. More than 60 people were injured.

     Rail overpass that collapsed in Mexico City has been a ticking time bomb, needed ‘ongoing maintenance’  

 

 

As cranes were removing two train cars that were left hanging from a light-rail overpass that collapsed on May 3, Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador promised a thorough and open investigation on the cause of the accident.

   He switched subway cars to be closer to the exit. It probably saved his life.    

 

 

A decision to change cars to be closer to a station exit may have saved Erik Bravo, who survived the collapse of an elevated subway line in Mexico City that killed 25 people and injured about 80 others.

Mexico City officials said on Saturday financial support would be increased for the families of victims who died after a metro railway line collapsed onto a busy street for a total of nearly 2 million pesos ($1,01,225).

Just outside the Olivos metro station in Mexico City, there is a haunting reminder of the darkest day in the capital's transit system: a gaping hole in the overhead track of Line 12.


 

Thick electrical wires hang between the concrete support columns, daylight visible where the overpass once stood.
