From Amtrak's website, 10/6/04:

Amtrak Sunset Limited Service Update

New Orleans-Jacksonville-Orlando service returns; Previously scheduled track work affects some trains through Dec. 3

The completion of hurricane-related track repairs by CSX Transportation will allow Amtrak to restore Sunset Limited passenger train service between New Orleans and Orlando, via Jacksonville, starting today, Oct. 6.  The Sunset Limited (Trains 1 & 2) operates three-days-weekly as a transcontinental service to and from Los Angeles and Orlando.

The first eastbound Sunset Limited from Los Angeles through the Florida panhandle will be the Train 2 that originates today, Oct. 6.

The first westbound Sunset Limited from Orlando through the Florida panhandle will be the Train 1 that originates on Sunday, Oct. 10.

All affected Amtrak stations will resume their regular hours with the effective dates of the return of service.

Hurricane-related damage and other issues delayed the full restoration of New Orleans-Orlando service that had been suspended since Sept. 1 westbound and Sept. 5 eastbound.  Scheduled service to and from Los Angeles and New Orleans, via Tucson and San Antonio, was restored on Sept. 17.

A scheduled CSX track improvement project through Dec. 3 will prevent Sunset Limited eastbound departures from Los Angeles on Sundays and westbound departures from Orlando on Thursdays from operating between New Orleans and Jacksonville.  Therefore, service between New Orleans and Orlando is canceled on those days, except for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The eastbound Sunset Limited from Los Angeles that originates on Oct.  10, 17, 24 and 31; Nov. 7, 14 and 28 will terminate in New Orleans instead of Orlando.

The westbound Sunset Limited scheduled from Orlando on Oct. 14, 21 and 28; Nov. 4, 11 and 18; Dec. 2 will originate in New Orleans instead of Orlando.

No alternate transportation will be available during the days and times Sunset Limited service is temporarily suspended between New Orleans and Orlando.

Amtrak passengers and others are invited to visit the www.amtrak.com website or call 800-USA-RAIL for additional information and further updates.
