I'll be taking a trip up the New Haven-Springfield corridor later this month (after the affected weekend) to see the construction progress along the line and also to check out refurbished Union Station in Springfield.

The 6 weekday Shuttle trains are not news --- they haven't run for well over a year and a half... and since completion of the line is scheduled to happen in the Spring of 2018, I would suppose that come September 29th we might see another extension of this routine.   The update happened because they are doing a full day closure of the line this Saturday, affecting the Vermonter, Shuttles, and the 2 Regional round trips.   Doing so also affects 2 northbound Regionals on Friday evening and 2 southbound Regionals on Sunday; otherwise equipment would get stranded away from the Northeast Corridor for a day.

Kevin, you will see a few changes along the line if you have not travelled up there in a few years:  From Hartford south to the former Newington Junction, the old NH rail line between New Britain and Hartford has been paved over & now you will see an express busway running alongside the Amtrak line on the west side.  At Hartford the old wooden platforms are gone, I was amazed they lasted so long. And at Hartford and several other stations, there are new high level platforms.  In Springfield the Union Station is now open, but Amtrak has not yet moved in, they are still upstairs at track level.

And a few things from the old days have not changed:  If you sit on the right side leaving New Haven, you will see the Shore Line to Boston diverging & just after that point the locomotive coaling tower is still standing.  In Windsor Locks you will still cross the Ct River on an 1850's stone bridge.

Send us a report on your trip.

Pete, I've been on that line quite a few times, however it's been difficult lately with the weekday and Saturday bustitutions over the past year.  I was up to Hartford last October and saw some of the station and platform construction then between there and New Haven. However my northbound trip (because of the lack of daytime trains) was on 494 which runs after dark that time of year, but I did catch it by day on a Saturday morning train southbound.   I have seen the construction of the parallel busway towards Hartford a few times, and saw it in action post its opening.   My trip next week is just to see progress since last year and do it by daylight northbound.
