Milwaukee streetcar project announces presenting sponsor and new name

 

Mayor Tom Barrett and Rodney Ferguson, CEO of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, today announced that the City of Milwaukee and the Forest County Potawatomi Community have come to an agreement whereby Potawatomi Hotel & Casino will be the presenting sponsor of the city's streetcar system. The name will be "The Hop, presented by Potawatomi Hotel & Casino."

 

That is a mouthful; surely just "The Hop" name will prevail.   Full story here.

Potawatomi to Sponsor Milwaukee Streetcar, Provide Free Rides for One Year

 

The CEO of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino joined Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Friday to announce a partnership between the city and the Forest County Potawatomi Community. The agreement calls for the Potawatomi to give $10 million to the city over the course of 12 years. The mayor's office says the money "will be used to offset operating costs and will include free rides for all for the first 12 months of the streetcar's operation."

Now that we've named it The Hop, Milwaukee streetcar starting to feel real

 

 

One of Milwaukee's oldest ideas, the streetcar, is new again.

 

The tracks are going in, and its name was announced last week. The Hop. It sounds dumb at first, and reminiscent of a dance for teenagers during the Eisenhower administration.

$65 Million Spent on Streetcar

 

Construction of the Milwaukee Streetcar is running ahead of schedule. Track work on the system’s first phase, which connects the Lower East Side, East Town, Historic Third Ward and Westown neighborhoods, is 90 percent complete according to the city. Construction on the $128 million system is being led by contractor Kiewet Infrastructure. The city has spent $65 million on the project so far.

First streetcar vehicle expected to arrive in Milwaukee next week

 

The first streetcar vehicle for The Hop, presented by Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, left manufacturer Brookville Equipment Corp. by flatbed truck today, and is expected to arrive in Milwaukee early next week.

First streetcar vehicle arrives in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee’s first streetcar vehicle arrived at its downtown destination Monday morning. 

The streetcar was shipped to Milwaukee by flatbed truck from its manufacturer in Brookville, Pennsylvania.  It took several days for the delivery to be made.
