San Francisco Chronicle, 1/18/18:

New BART rail cars could start service in time for Friday’s evening commute

BART’s first 10 new rail cars have been approved to start carrying passengers by the state Public Utilities Commission and could be in service in time for the Friday evening commute.

The long-awaited approval came Wednesday night in a letter to BART General Manager Grace Crunican from Elizaveta Malashenko, director of the utilities commission’s safety and enforcement division.

“Congratulations on achieving this milestone,” Malashenko wrote.

BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost said Thursday that the new trains could start carrying passengers Friday afternoon after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony and an inaugural ride with longtime BART employees, some passengers who rode the first BART trains in 1972 and elected officials aboard.

BART's new train cars now in service

BART’s new Fleet of the Future train is here. The very first customers to ride the new train cars boarded the train at MacArthur Station this morning as it made its inaugural passenger run. The new cars feature a wide spectrum of improvements over BART’s legacy fleet, currently the oldest fleet in the nation. The Fleet of the Future cars are:

  • Quieter:  micro-plug doors help seal out noise and a new tapered wheel shape will provide a quieter ride
  • Cooler:  cooling systems distribute air directly from the ceilings, making it more comfortable for standees on hot days
  • Comfortable:  padded seats will have lumbar support and are covered with wipeable fabric for ease of cleaning
  • Easy to use:  routes are color coded like the BART system map, and next stop information is readily available via automated announcements and digital screens.

Perhaps the most notable difference is that the new cars have three doors on each side instead of two which will allow for quicker on-and-off boarding. This is important as BART works to improve its capacity to carry more passengers; since BART first ordered 775 new rail cars in 2012, ridership has grown 14 percent. “I am thrilled our riders finally get a chance to ride in these cars they helped design,” said General Manager Grace Crunican. “These state-of-the-art cars represent a new chapter for BART. Commuters and casual riders alike will notice a huge improvement in their experience.”  Read more.

New Train Cars in Service

Published on Jan 19, 2018

10 of BART's new train cars are now rolling through the East Bay. The first lucky passengers boarded the train at the MacArthur station this morning. The quieter, cooler and more comfortable trains will be running non-peak hours on the Richmond line for a few weeks, as the new cars ease into routine schedules. 10 more cars are being tested and more trains will be arriving every month.

More BART riders than ever before can now ride the Fleet of the Future through the Transbay Tube.  By mid-February, every transbay line will be served by a Fleet of the Future train.  As more new cars arrive, BART is expanding its hands-on training for the operators who will run the new fleet.

On the latest edition of our podcast series, “Hidden Tracks: Stories from BART” we’ll learn more about the preparation that goes into being a Fleet of the Future Train Operator.  We’ll hear from one of the first graduates of the training program and learn what it’s like to operate one of BART’s newest trains.  Listen to our new podcast.

Ride Safe: Download the BART Watch App, save 510-464-7000 for BART Police in your phone, and secure electronic devices when the train door is opening. More tips and info about what we are doing to address the homeless crisis at www.bart.gov/ridesafe

Putting Fleet of the Future cars to the test to ensure safety and reliability before they carry passengers

fotftest2_crop.png

A complete door assembly has been built including actuators to simulate blockages

When new Fleet of the Future train cars are delivered to BART property, they don't start carrying passengers right away. Instead, they first must undergo a series of tests to make sure they perform to specifications for safety, performance and longevity.

Some 70 cars have completed their on-site acceptance testing and are carrying passengers – enough for four 10-car trains to be in regular service and the rest used to  provide crucial training for operators and maintenance workers.

By the end of April, BART expects to hit a milestone with 80 new train cars, enabling one 10-car Fleet of the Future train to be running on each of BART’s five lines, with the rest still undergoing testing and being used for training. Rigorous tests -- like opening and closing doors 1.5 million times -- ensure they'll be rail-ready when they carry their first passengers. Read more on what's in store as more and more new train cars are delivered, including how you'll be able to catch a new one on your line.

San Francisco (CA) Examiner, 9/12/19

BART operators warn Fleet of the Future could trap passengers during fires, emergencies

Trains using new cars configured in a way that restricts the movement of riders between cars

At least, in their current configuration.

That’s the claim of BART operator Michael Granat. Granat was a lone voice speaking out at a July BART board meeting, but since he first came forward, more operators have joined his cause.

BART’s Fleet of the Future consists of two car types: E Cars and D Cars. E Cars operate like older cars in that they feature doors on both ends that lead to the next train car.

D Cars, however, feature a small operator unit, so they feature more difficult doors on that end that can only be opened by BART operators. The agency confirmed that passengers cannot open D Car doors at one end of the vehicle without the assistance of an operator.
