Metrorail: Possible breakthrough in train arson attack probe

 

CAPE TOWN - There's reportedly been a breakthrough in investigations into a rash of arson attacks on Metrorail trains in Cape Town.

 

It's believed a person has been taken in for questioning in connection with one arson incident, but it’s unclear at this stage if the individual has been charged.

Railway regulator slams torching of trains

 

The regulator said on Friday that the arson actions can lead to injuries and fatalities and will cause a further burden and discomfort for commuters.

 

The regulator said it was aware of problems‚ including the fact that the rail infrastructure is old and in some instances in a poor condition. “The arson attacks are ill conceived as they are causing further interruption to train services” and the cost to the economy is “immense”.
