AP via WTOP radio, 10/23/17:

Choices: Amazon says it got 238 entries for 2nd headquarters

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon will be sorting through 238 proposals from cities and regions in the United States, Canada and Mexico that are hoping to land the company’s second headquarters and the investment it’ll bring.

The online had retailer kicked off its hunt for a second home base in September, promising 50,000 new jobs and construction spending of more than $5 billion. Proposals were due last week, and Amazon made clear that tax breaks and grants would be a big factor in deciding what entry prevails.

Amazon.com Inc. did not specify which cities or metro areas applied, but many of the location have made their interest public. The company said Monday the proposals came from 43 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, as well as three Mexican states and six Canadian provinces.

Amazon just released the list of metro areas it’s considering for its second HQ

Amazon.com has released a list of 20 regions in the United States and Canada that the online retail giant is considering as a possible site for its second headquarters.

The list, released Thursday, includes major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, Dallas and Atlanta, as well as smaller communities including Pittsburgh, Raleigh and Nashville.

The nation's capital is heavily represented, with D.C., northern Virginia and the Maryland suburb of Montgomery County also making the cut.

January 18, 2018 9:22 am

WASHINGTON — Amazon narrowed down the list of nearly 240 submissions for cities and jurisdictions that want to land its second North American headquarters, and the Washington region makes the cut.

All three move to what Amazon calls the next phase of the selection process.

The New York Times, 1/18/18:

Amazon Chooses 20 Finalists for Second Headquarters

SEATTLE — Amazon said on Thursday that it had whittled the list of possible homes for its second headquarters to 20, including centers of technology like Boston and some surprise locations like Columbus, Ohio.

The list of finalists leans toward locations in the Midwest and South and on the East Coast, and away from the tech-saturated hubs of the West Coast. Many of the finalists, including Dallas, Denver, Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, were considered shoo-ins from the moment Amazon announced the search, largely because of the attributes that the company said it was seeking for its second home. Those criteria included a metropolitan area with a population of greater than one million and the ability to attract and keep strong technical talent.

More unexpected was Amazon’s selection of Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Nashville; and Miami. Other cities that made the list include Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, New York and Toronto. Los Angeles was the sole city from the West Coast to make the cut.

Boston among cities on short list for Amazon headquarters

In the fierce competition to be Amazon’s second home, Boston has moved on to the next round.

The Washington Post, 1/22/18:

A $5 billion carrot: Larry Hogan’s historic offer to win Amazon HQ2

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan ® will offer more than $3 billion in tax breaks and grants and about $2 billion in transportation upgrades to persuade Amazon.com to bring its second headquarters and up to 50,000 jobs to Montgomery County.

Hogan’s proposal, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, is designed to give the state an edge over 19 competitors, including the District and Northern Virginia, in luring the online retail giant to build a 100-acre campus in White Flint or another site in North Bethesda.

It appears to be the second-most generous set of inducements among the 20 locations on Amazon’s shortlist. Of the offerings whose details have become public, either through government or local media accounts, only New Jersey’s is larger, at $7 billion. (Emphasis added)
