Our visit is within the 10-day forecasts now. Naturally, forecasters are sometimes unable to get it right in a shorter term, so take this for what it is worth. As of 7/13/08, for Tampa they show high 80's to low 90's every day from now until our visit, with possibility of scattered or isolated thunderstorms every day including those during our visit. One would expect that these pop up in the latter part of the day, and while drenching they should also be quick. Welcome to the tropics! As of 7/13/08, for Miami they are showing highs in the upper 80's every day from now until July 22nd. Scattered or isolated thunderstorms are predicted for every day until July 21st, the day we arrive in the Miami area, and then Tuesday, July 22nd is the first day they say it will be sunny all day. Updates to follow.

So weather will be more or less like here in NJ, including scattered drenching thunderstorms each afternoon, except perhaps a few degrees warmer.

Because Florida has been having cooling rains often this summer (which is very welcome since they are technically still in a drought), there have been days when it was hotter in NJ than it was in southern Florida.

Actually despite the temperature, jacket and an umbrella (the 3 syllable one that keeps you dry, not the 12 syllable one in a famous Rhiana song) might not be a bad idea. Florida has been deluged this season, and in fact the Tampa Bay area just went through a storm that was beginning to show signs of possibly turning into a tropical depression. Thankfully (but not thankfully for Steve and Rosalyn who have to travel through it in the Gulf), it is going out to sea and turning north. The same storm may be dumping very needed rain over Georgia and the Carolinas when we come through on the Silver Star over the weekend. Friday 7/18, Saturday 7/19, Sunday 7/20, and Monday 7/21 the Weather Channel shows isolated or scattered thunderstorms popping up usually in the PM hours on all but Sunday. Sunday should be the best of the days, mostly sunny with a high of 92 degrees. Temps will be similar on the other days, with lows at night in the mid-70's. Weather Channel as of Thursday night is showing temps in Miami all 3 days we will be there (Monday thru Wednesday 7/21 to 7/23) with highs around 87, lows at night in the upper 70's, and the possibility of isolated thunder storms in the afternoon or evening.

Here is where you can come back to do a quick weather check:

Miami

Tampa

Weather Radars:

Miami

Tampa

And here is a neat single view summary of Florida....

Interactive Weather Map of Florida!

And for the entire route north of Florida!

Interactive Weather Map - New York to Georgia.

You can animate these maps too, i.e. do a time progression movie presentation. How to do it is obvious and I leave it to you as an exercise.

Have fun! See you fellow travelers tomorrow!
